The mosque is one of the oldest Seljuk works and was built on Alaaddin Hill. Construction began during the reign of Seljuk Sultan Rukneddin Mesud I (1116-1156) and was completed during the reign of Alaaddin Keykubad I (1221). The tombs of Mesud I, Kilij Arslan, Rukneddin Suleyman II, Ghiyaseddin Keyhüsrev I, Alaaddin Keykubad I, Ghiyaseddin Keyhüsrev II, Kilij Arslan IV, and Ghiyaseddin Keyhüsrev III are located in the mosque's courtyard.
