Amida Mound, the oldest known settlement in Diyarbakır, is located within the city walls, in the northeastern corner on the Tigris River side, northwest of the Inner Citadel, which is accessed through the Palace Gate. It is known that the first settlement began in the Middle Neolithic Period, around 7000 BC, and has continued uninterrupted to the present day. Initial archaeological investigations at the mound unearthed ceramic vessel fragments and chipped stone tools dating from the prehistoric period to the Early Modern period. During excavations in 1962, a mosaic courtyard from the Artuklu period was uncovered on the mound's summit. Excavation work continues at Amida Mound with the permission of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
