Although there is no definitive information about the history of Anemurium, located on the eastern slopes of Anamur Cape, the southernmost point of Anatolia, written sources suggest that the city was founded in the 4th century BC. The city, which became known during the explorations of British Colonel Francis Beaufort in the Mediterranean in the 19th century, saw the initiation of surface surveys in 1960 by Elisabeth Alfoldi Rosenbaum of the University of Toronto, Canada. Excavation and restoration work, later led by Professor James Russell of the University of British Columbia, Canada, concluded in 1998.
