The Bandırma steamship holds a significant place in our history as the vessel that transported Mustafa Kemal Pasha, who was to serve as the Inspector of the IX Army Corps, and his comrades to Samsun on May 19, 1919, playing a crucial role in initiating the Turkish National Struggle from Anatolia. Indeed, the Bandırma steamship brought Mustafa Kemal Pasha and his General Staff, key officers who would undertake significant tasks in advancing the National Struggle into Anatolia and spreading it throughout the country, from Istanbul to Samsun after a three day sea voyage, becoming, in effect, the vessel carrying the fate of a nation.

Bandırma Vapuru, IX. Ordu Kıtaatı Müfettişliği görevini icra edecek olan Mustafa Kemal Paşa ve silah arkadaşlarını 19 Mayıs 1919’da Samsun’a ulaştıran ve Türk Millî Mücadelesinin Anadolu üzerinden başlatılmasında çok önemli bir görevi yerine getiren vapur olarak tarihimizdeki yerini almıştır. Zira Bandırma Vapuru, Millî Mücadele’nin Anadolu içlerine doğru ilerleyip tüm yurda yayılmasında büyük görevleri üstlenecek olan önemli subayları, yani Mustafa Kemal Paşa ile Karargâh Heyetini, üç günlük deniz yolculuğunun ardından İstanbul’dan Samsun’a getirmiş ve adeta bir Millet’ in kaderini taşıyan vasıta olmuştur.
