Founded by Macedonians in 334 BC, the ancient city is located in the Lydia region, near the Phrygian border. A military city during the Pergamon Kingdom, the settlement maintained its strategic importance during the Roman and Byzantine periods.[1] There are differences regarding the ancient name of the city. While the city's name appears as Mlaundus on ancient coins,[2] it is written as Blaundus in a Greek inscription from the Roman period.[2] The city's name was Blaundos, as understood in 1845 when W. J. Hamilton found an inscription from Ulubey and it read "Blaundeon Makedonan (Macedonian Blaundus)".
