In the 7th century BC, the city was named Daskyleion after the famous Lydian king known as Daskylos came here from Sardis due to dynastic struggles. His son Gyges, born in Daskyleion, was later recalled to Lydia. After Gyges became king of Lydia, the city was called Daskyleion because it means "place of Daskylos." It received this name around 650 BC. Daskyleion, like Troy, is a city with early settlements. According to some ancient writers, a group of Aeolians came and settled in Daskyleion in the 12th century BC. However, surface surveys have unearthed findings that place the city in earlier periods (the Chalcolithic period).
