The Eğil district was under the rule of the Subarians, Hurrians, and Mitanni between 3500-1260 BC, and then dominated by the Assyrians between 1260-606 BC. Eğil Castle is believed to have been built during this period. To the west of the castle, there is a stele and inscription thought to belong to the Assyrian king Salmanassar III. Furthermore, numerous cave tombs and rock tombs, believed to belong to Assyrian kings, are located around the castle. These findings demonstrate the advanced stonework and architectural skills of the Assyrians. Excavations continue at Eğil Castle with the permission of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
