Kızkalesi – Also known as the Mersin Sea Castle, Kızkalesi is situated on a small islet off the coast of the neighborhood from which it takes its name. It is approximately 600 meters from the shore. An inscription found here reveals that it was built in 1199 by Leo I. It was captured by the Kingdom of Cyprus in 1361. Strabon mentions that pirates used the castle as a refuge during the Roman period. The castle was considered as important by the Byzantines and Armenians as the mainland castle.
