The monastery is located on the slopes of Boztepe, within the boundaries of the central district, in a commanding position overlooking the city. Built on two terraces, the monastery complex is surrounded by a high protective wall. Founded during the reign of Alexios III (1349-1390), it underwent several repairs and acquired its final form in the 19th century. Initially, it consisted of a rock church to the south containing holy water, a chapel at its entrance, and a few cells. Inside the rock church are inscriptions and portraits of Alexios III's wife Theodora and his mother Eirene.
