Hasankeyf

Since the excavation work in Hasankeyf is not yet complete, it is not known with certainty who founded Hasankeyf. However, it is one of the places that sheds light on world civilization, being the center of the first human settlement area, where people first settled down, and where the most fertile lands were located. Besides the geographically protected features it possesses, its location right on the banks of the Tigris River confirms its importance as one of the significant places in Upper Mesopotamia. In recent years, excavations in Hasankeyf have revealed traces of the Hurrian and Mitani civilizations that lived here around 5000 BC. It is known that from around 3500 BC onwards, the Sumerians, Akkadians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Medes, and Persians ruled in the Tigris and Euphrates basin.
