Hattusa (Çorum, Boğazköy), which was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986, was a very important center in Anatolia for centuries as the capital of the Hittite Empire. Initially called "Hattush" by its first owners, the Hattians, the city took the name "Hattusa" after it came under Hittite rule. Captured by Anitta, the king of Kushara, around 1700 BC, Hattusa was subsequently destroyed by Anitta. In written records, Anitta is the first Hittite king. Approximately a century later, the city was rebuilt by Hattusili I and became the capital of a civilization that would rule for over 400 years. The ruins visible today, most of which date from the reign of the Great King Tudhaliya IV, include temples, royal residences, and city walls.
