It is a Thracian settlement. This settlement, with numerous cultural layers, was continuously inhabited from at least the 2nd millennium BC, including the Byzantine Empire period, according to surface findings. The ancient city of Heraion Teikhos was a wealthy Thracian port city. The ancient writer Diodorus mentions the war between the Thracian King Kersopleptes and the Macedonian King Philip II in the mid-4th century BC. He reports that although Heraion Teikhos had a strong fortress, King Kersopleptes lost this war, and after the war, Philip II took one of the defeated king's sons to Macedonia and appointed Kersopleptes as governor of the city. Excavations at Heraion Teikhos are currently the only Thracian city excavation site in Turkish Thrace.
