The Dolions, who settled on the slopes of Mount Olympos (Uludağ) in Mysia and later descended to the Aisepos Plain, or who settled in this region (between Aisepos/Gönen Kocaçay and Rindkos/Mustafa Kemal Paşa Atranos River) from Thessalia, are the oldest tribe living in Kyzikos. For this reason, this region is also called Dolionia or Dolionis. In Greek mythology, the Argonauts, who set out from Greece to obtain the Golden Fleece in Georgia (Colchis), stopped in Dolionia (Kyzikos) on their way. King Kyzikos welcomed the Argonauts well. He fed them, gave them drink, and sent them on their way with plenty of provisions. That night, the Argonauts were caught in a storm and landed on dry land. Unaware that they had landed back on Dolonia's soil in the darkness of night, the Argonauts mistook King Kyzikos and his men for enemies and engaged in battle. However, King Kyzikos died in this battle, and the city was named Kyzikos after him.
