According to the inscription under the large archway on the east side, the construction of the madrasa began in 590 AH (1193-1194) during the reign of Abu Muzaffer Sökmen II. A two line inscription on a white stone above the window, immediately west of the mihrab, states that the madrasa was completed in 620 AH (1222-1223) during the reign of Mawdud, also known as Malik Masud.
