Located in the north of Marmara Island, within the boundaries of Saraylar village, this city is famous for its marble. Sarcophagi, steles, pedestals, columns, and column capitals, among other materials, were semi finished at the marble quarries and shipped from here to Italy and Istanbul, especially during the Roman and Byzantine periods. Today, these ancient marble quarries continue to be operated.
