The Tigris River, 1,900 km long, originates in the mountains of Eastern Anatolia, flows through Syria and Iraq, and empties into the Persian Gulf. One of the oldest water sources in human history, the river is considered the lifeblood of agriculture. Many settlements have been established along the river, and Diyarbakır is one of the oldest cities on the banks of the Tigris River.
