A large part of the district's territory is mountainous. A section of the Bitlis Mountains is located in the northern region. These mountains make transportation impossible in winter. The most important river in the district is the Hoşap River, which flows into Lake Van. There are plains along the shores of Lake Van. The economy is based on animal husbandry. Sheep are the most commonly raised animal. Since the tribal system prevails in the district, they take their herds to the highlands in the summer. Because livestock trade is widespread, animal products are scarce. Milk, cheese, wool, and leather are the most important animal products. The region's herbal cheese is famous. Agriculture is practiced in the plains along the lake shore. The most widely produced agricultural product is sugar beet. Small quantities of wheat, barley, potatoes, walnuts, and apples are also grown. Beekeeping is well developed in the district. The district center is located on the northern slopes of Çadır Mountain, 3 km south of the lake shore. The Muş Bitlis Van highway passes within 2 km of the district. It is 39 km from the provincial center. The district municipality was established in 1923. After Ahlat district of Bitlis, this district has the most important Seljuk cemetery in the region.
