The courtyard is said to have been completed in 1235/36 by Köpek bin Muhammed during the reign of Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I, while a four line Arabic inscription in Thuluth script on the courtyard gate states that the courtyard was completed in 1236/37 by the same builder during the reign of Seljuk Sultan Gıyaseddin Keyhüsrev II. Both inscriptions mention Köpek bin Muhammed as the builder, who is the famous Seljuk Emir, Emir i Şikâr, painter, and architect Sadeddin Köpek. It is likely that he was also the architect of the caravanserai.
