Paul of Tarsus (Saint Paul), one of Jesus' apostles, and Barnabas, another pioneer of Christianity who lived in Tarsus, undertook various journeys in Anatolia in 41 AD to spread Christianity. Temples were built in their memory in almost every place they stayed during their travels. However, since Christianity was not yet an official religion at that time and worship was secret, it was preferred that the temples be located in secluded and difficult to reach places.
