Although the exact date of the castle's construction is unknown, it is understood that it was built or underwent significant repairs during the period of the Cilician Armenian Kingdom. The name of Symbat, lord of Gülek, appears in a coronation list belonging to this kingdom, dating from 1198-1199. The castle's name at that time was "Asakaliba".
